Renovation of the RoRo 5 berth
The Western Harbour is investing in the renovation of RoRo 5, aimed at improving freight traffic services to meet the needs of the large RoRo vessels.
The timber-constructed RoRo 5 berth was completed in the early 1900s and has been in use ever since. The berth is now undergoing much-needed renovations to bring it up to modern standards.
The berth will be extended, providing more usable length and space for larger vessels. At the same time, part of the berth will be constructed further inland so that the harbour basin can be kept wide enough for ships headed to other berths. Moving the current ramp 63 metres inland will make it possible to utilise a greater total length without affecting the use of other berths.
“The trailer areas used for unloading ships will be relocated closer to the dock as part of the berth renovation. This will reduce the need for trailer movement and transport within the port area,” states Chief Technology Officer Björn Peltonen.
“Cutting down on the daily movement of 200 to 300 trailers coming in and out every day will make operations more efficient. It will also save on fuel and reduce emissions.”
The final schedule for the RoRo 5 berth renovation project will be confirmed at a later date.
