Renewal of the Western Harbour entrance area
The Western Harbour’s entrance area is being renovated in 2025–2026 to improve the flow and safety of entry and exit traffic.
The traffic organisation improvements that began in the summer of 2025 will reduce congestion at the entrance area and ensure smooth access to the port for authorised visitors. New control facilities and a new Green Line lane have been constructed at the entrance, allowing vehicles with valid permits to drive directly into the port.
If there is any uncertainty regarding the registration plate or access permit, the vehicle will be directed to another lane. In that case, the gatekeeper will carry out the necessary checks and either grant permission to proceed to the port or turn the visitor away. The access control systems at the entrance area will also be upgraded to provide more accurate information about freight units going forward.
The Port of Hanko’s Chief Technology Officer Björn Peltonen reports that the work went well and without any significant disruption to port traffic.
“During construction, temporary arrangements were made to the entry route. But the old access control system remained operational while the new system, lanes, and checkpoints were being built alongside. The renovation of the entrance area will be completed in spring 2026 after some finishing touches.”
